If you know me, you’ll know I’m happiest in or near the water. Swimming, snorkelling, out on a boat, or just finding a sunny spot and staying there as long as I can. If there’s sunshine on holiday, that’s where I’ll be.
But I’ll be honest, like a lot of us who grew up in the 70s and 80s, we didn’t exactly get sun protection right. A “good tan” usually meant lying out all day with barely anything on your skin, and if you had factor 2 or a bit of carrot oil, you thought you were doing alright. Looking back now, it’s a bit frightening.
Thankfully, we know better now. It’s not about avoiding the sun or overthinking it, it’s just about being a bit more aware and looking after ourselves properly. Our skin does a huge job for us, and if we take care of it, we can keep enjoying all those beach days and sunshine holidays for years to come.
Over time, I’ve also started thinking more about the impact beyond just my own skin. We all hear about climate change, and while it can feel overwhelming, small choices do make a difference.
One thing that really stuck with me is what happens when sun cream washes off in the sea. You know that slight oily film you sometimes see when you first get in? That’s it. Many traditional sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm coral reefs, and these reefs are already under pressure from warming oceans and climate change.
Coral reefs are incredible. They support marine life, protect coastlines, and play a huge role in keeping our oceans healthy. When they’re damaged, it affects everything around them, from wildlife to the communities who depend on them. So even something as simple as switching your sunscreen can help in a small but meaningful way.
That’s why I’ve moved towards using reef-friendly options. It feels like a simple change, but one that makes sense when you spend so much time in the sea and travel to these beautiful places.
I’ve been using a sunscreen from Tropic Skincare and it really suits me. It protects well, feels nice on the skin, and it’s kinder to the ocean too. It’s not the cheapest, but it lasts and, when you think about it, it’s a small investment compared to the damage the sun can do over time.
And that’s the other side of it. Skin cancer is something so many people are affected by now. Most of us know someone who has been through it, and it really brings home how important it is to look after our skin. Being sensible in the sun and protecting yourself properly can make such a difference in the long run.
For me, it’s just about being a bit more mindful. Looking after your skin, protecting your health, and doing your bit for the places we all love to visit.
So enjoy the sunshine, get in the sea, make the most of every holiday… just don’t forget your sun cream.
