Hello, I’m Amanda McKinlay and I’m the Branch Manager (Largs) at Thorne Travel.
I have been in the travel industry since 2016 and have always had a passion for travel.
In my previous role as a Make-up Artist for a global brand, I was always travelling to different events around the world.
Being a Travel Consultant was always something that I wanted to do, but the bright lights of Broadway (the Make-up world) pulled me in. While I loved every minute of it, the lure of the travel industry never really left me.
When I saw the vacancy for a Travel Consultant at Thorne TraveI, I knew it was the right time for me to change careers and I have never looked back! I have learned so much since joining the business and I was delighted to be appointed to the role of Branch Manager in 2022.
I enjoy every day at Thorne Travel. I’m part of a brilliant team and I’ve been incredibly lucky to have visited some wonderful places. Most of all, I love helping our customers to find and book their holidays; allowing them to spend quality time with the people they love.
Some Nice Comments About Me
“Just booked our wedding and honeymoon with the lovely Amanda. We got everything we wanted and so much more! I cannot thank Amanda enough, her knowledge and attention to detail was incredible. We are so looking forward to spending our perfect day with our families and friends. Highly recommended!”
Favourite Places
India was a really amazing place, it is so full of colour and history. The Taj Mahal is one of the most breathtaking sights that I have ever seen.
New York is a destination that never disappoints. It is full of life and there is an incredible amount of things to see and do. You can understand why it is called ‘The City that Never Sleeps’.
Barbados is also a fabulous place and it’s not just a tropical beach holiday. The island is steeped in history and there is all of that lovely Rum … lots and lots of Rum!
Travel Tips
Travelling with kids: If arriving during the day, have swimwear in your hand luggage. If your room isn’t ready, the kids can still have fun at the pool while you wait.
Spending money: Split your spending money up for each day. I always do this on holiday and it means that you can enjoy every day without worrying about overspending. There tends to be some extra money left at the end of your holiday for a nice treat – it’s usually a handbag for me!
What’s the most unforgettable trip you’ve ever taken?
I would have to say India. It truly is an amazing destination—the people, the culture, the food, the history, and, of course, the breathtaking Taj Mahal.
What is one destination that surprised you in a good way?
Iceland really surprised me. I had seen the pictures and heard about its beauty, but I didn’t fully appreciate it until I was there. The landscapes are truly out of this world, and it’s a place that I definitely want to return to and explore further.
Are you more of a beach lounger or an adventure seeker?
I would love to be a beach lounger, but the truth is I get bored after about an hour. I need to go and explore! I’m drawn to anything with history and enjoy learning about the local culture
What is your dream travel destination that you have not visited yet?
Japan is at the top of my list. I would love to visit and experience the energy of Tokyo as well as explore the ancient temples and historical sites scattered across the country.
What is your go-to travel hack or tip that you always share with clients?
If you can, book the lounge at the airport. It is the best way to start your trip. It is less stressful, and you can relax with a glass of wine in a comfortable seat, charge your phone, and enjoy watching the planes take off until it is your turn.
What is one destination you think everyone should visit at least once in their life?
Barbados. It is not just a beach holiday—there is so much to do on the island. The food is incredible, the people are amazing, and the beaches are beautiful. Plus, there is no shortage of rum to enjoy while you are there!
