Have a long weekend off? I took the opportunity to enjoy a magical city break to Copenhagen! Whether you’re new to solo travel or just looking for a European getaway filled with friendly people, delicious food, and breathtaking sights—this is the perfect destination.
I flew directly from Edinburgh to Copenhagen, and the journey couldn’t have been smoother. The flight was under 2 hours, and the metro took only 15 minutes to reach the city center. From the moment I arrived, I was struck by Copenhagen’s energy— vibrant, incredibly clean, and welcoming.
Navigating the city was effortless, thanks to the well-connected metro system. I highly recommend getting the Copenhagen Card, which you can purchase in advance. It grants unlimited public transport and access to popular attractions for a set price—super convenient!
For accommodation, I stayed at Wakeup Copenhagen, Carsten Niebuhrs Gade, a budget-friendly hotel conveniently located near the main train station, metro links, and major sights.
Food-wise, you have to try Pico Pizza—they serve mini sourdough pizza tapas, and it’s an absolute must! If you’re a coffee lover, stop by Espresso House, a popular café chain in Northern Europe. Their coffee is fantastic, and they offer great specialty teas and pastries too.
Copenhagen is a stunning blend of colourful old buildings and modern design. Nyhavn is one of the most picturesque spots, with its vibrant boutique shops, bars and restaurants at the waterfront with houses and boats ( One of my highlights was watching the sunset here)
With the Copenhagen Card, I explored popular attractions such as Rosenburg Castle, the Botanic Gardens, the Museum of Illusions, the Guinness World Records Museum, the Church of Our Saviour, and the Round Tower. Just a short metro ride away is Freetown Christiania, a unique community known for its hippie, anarchist, and communal lifestyle. The area is filled with vibrant graffiti, murals, and distinctive architecture crafted by its residents.
Having traveled solo to multiple cities, this is the safest I’ve ever felt. The locals embrace the Hygge lifestyle, which revolves around slow living, well-being, and comfort. It’s deeply ingrained in Danish culture and reflected in everything from candle-lit cafés to leisurely strolls along the canals.
If Copenhagen isn’t on your travel list yet, it should be! ✨
